About Davies Vineyards

Davies Vineyards carries forward the Napa Valley legacy of Jack and Jamie Davies, who purchased and revitalized the historic Schramsberg property in 1965. The estate's roots reach back to 1862, when Jacob Schram established vineyards on Diamond Mountain. The Davies family became celebrated for traditional-method sparkling wines before bringing its decades of vineyard experience to still Cabernet Sauvignon.

From Schramsberg to Davies Vineyards

In 1994, the family began replanting historic Diamond Mountain vineyard blocks to Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux grapes. The first J. Davies Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was made from the 2001 vintage and released in 2004 in honor of Jack Davies. Hugh Davies, who joined the family business as a winemaker, continued expanding its red-wine program.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: a separate expression

Davies Vineyards' Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a distinct bottling from its J. Davies Estate wine. Instead of relying only on the family’s Diamond Mountain property, the Napa Valley label brings together fruit from selected vineyard locations across mountain and valley-floor appellations. The 2022 wine featured in Mash & Vine Market's Red Collection is the eleventh vintage of that multi-site Napa Valley release.

The winery describes its vineyard approach as deliberately low-yield, aiming for concentration, rich texture and structure. The 2022 blend combines Cabernet Sauvignon with Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, while French-oak aging contributes complementary texture and aromatic complexity.

Napa Valley vineyards and the 2022 growing season

This wine brings together fruit from across Napa Valley rather than only the family’s J. Davies Estate bottling. The producer describes sourcing from mountain and valley-floor locations, spanning microclimates from Calistoga and St. Helena to Coombsville and Carneros.

The season followed substantial late-2021 rainfall, a drier winter and early spring, episodes of frost and hail, and warmer summer weather. A strong September heat wave accelerated harvest. The winery describes the resulting 2022 Cabernet profile as ranging from vivid and elegant to concentrated and powerful.
